杨兰芳说，她闻讯赶去那条羊肠小道时，杨改兰还没断气，她的大重孙女也没断气，但看起来十分痛苦。她曾经说，让杨改兰把这个孩子“留下”，但杨改兰没同意，还说反正女儿大了也是嫁人（意思是成了别人家的媳妇）。
闻讯赶来的亲人和村民又是报警又是喊救护车，很想把杨改兰和她的大女儿、小儿子“留下”。村里的路实在不通，救护车只能停在进村路的土路口。
李克英接到电话也赶来了。很少回家的李克英被眼前的一幕吓傻，他一言不发、没流眼泪，抱起儿子就向村口走，半路上，儿子断气了，他又把儿子抱回家。
尽管杨改兰的大女儿并未在现场身亡，但仍没闯过鬼门关。杨改兰家人证实，她是穿着杨改兰此前去几公里外的镇上买来的新衣服（家人中途为其换上）离开这个世界的——买回家后，杨兰芳一直不让她传那套衣服，说是怕脏了，让她等开学再穿。
29日，杨改兰死亡后，她的遗体被火化，骨灰被撒入河中。
李克英料理妻子、儿女的身后事后，曾回老家，后又返回杨改兰家。
再后来，人们发现了他的尸体。
县委宣传部发布的通报称“县、镇、村干部组织本村群众帮助李某英（系杨改兰丈夫）妥善安葬了死者。对李某英本人县、镇、村干部专门上门进行了安抚慰问和心理疏导，李某英本人情绪稳定，但事发后第八天即9月4日，在阿姑山村树林发现李某英尸体，经公安机关侦查系服毒身亡。随后，死者也由县、镇、村干部组织村民进行了妥善安葬。”
李克义说，李克英一家6口人，至死都没有埋葬在一起，他的4个子女被埋葬在杨家附近半山腰上，李克英下葬那天，当地警方说他的棺材不得进入杨家大门，否则她就死给人看，警方告诉他，杨家奶奶手中当时拿着菜刀。
都是低保惹的祸？
有媒体曾经报道，杨改兰一家曾享受低保，不知后来何故取消。甚至有传闻是村民投票、商议的结果，因为杨家人比较老实、人缘不好，低保被分给家境比她家好的人家。
这说法被官方予以否认，当地县政府发布称：杨满堂（杨改兰父亲）家在2014年之前，纳入农村三类低保，具体情况为：2010年杨满堂家中实有6口人（即杨满堂奶奶、母亲、本人、杨改兰夫妇、杨满堂二女儿）纳入农村三类低保5人（因杨满堂母亲杨兰芳户籍不在康乐县，故未纳入低保），全年领取低保金3480元；2011年纳入农村三类低保5人（同上），全年领取低保金3900元；2012年纳入农村三类低保3人（因杨满堂奶奶去世，杨满堂二女儿出嫁，2人低保被核销），领取低保金2880元；2013年纳入农村三类低保3人（同上），领取低保金3240元。2013年12月份，在农村低保动态管理中，经群众评议该户未通过，在入户调查中，其家庭总收入为36585.76元，其中：种植业收入8650元，务工收入21000元，能繁母猪收入5700元，农资补贴976.76元，其他收入259元，人均纯收入为5226.5元，该户人均纯收入高于当年农村低保标准，故核销了该户的农村低保。
此外，经调查，该户2013年家庭总收入为39915.76元，人均纯收入为4989.5元，超出人均2300元的贫困线标准，因此没有被评定为贫困户。
但李克英的堂弟李克义说，李克英的打工收入并不高，他们这样的农村出去的打工者，一天小工工资不过120元左右，有时候一个星期也没有工作。
