报道称，由于解放军海军采取“先求有，再求精”的立场，因此001A航母是依照“辽宁”号航母的操作经验而设计的，同样采用滑跳式甲板与传统燃油动力，只是吨位较“辽宁”号稍大一些，并且根据“辽宁”号的操作经验，因此重要设备会安排更合理，如滑跳甲板的角度就修正为12度，可以有效节省起飞燃油的消耗。另外舰岛安装的雷达与电子设备，也全部以大陆的自制产品为设计考量，不会像“辽宁”号那样是半途改装，有许多因陋就简、迁就既有空间等问题。
此前外界推测001A可能会采用滑跳与弹射器混搭的方式，不过这种安排过于复杂，所以即使大陆的电磁弹射器设计成功，也不会立刻就安装001A上。
