假如船舶要从大坝下游驶向上游——
首先船舶驶入承船厢，关闭承船厢下游闸门。
承船厢通过爬升装置上升，直到承船厢内水位与上游水库水位齐平。
打开承船厢上游闸门，船舶驶出承船厢进入上游航道。
船舶从上游向下游行驶，与其过程相反。
三峡升船机经历13年缓建和8年续建
作为世界最大水利枢纽三峡工程的最后一个建设项目，三峡升船机被誉为三峡工程最后的“谜底”。在经历了13年缓建和8年续建之后，于今年5月13日和9月13日分别通过试通航前和消防工程验收，具备投入试运行的条件。根据交通运输部长江航务管理局《关于三峡升船机试通航工作方案》，三峡升船机于2016年9月起进入试通航期。
据介绍，试通航将分为四个阶段。第一阶段从2016年9月18日至三峡水库2016年试验性蓄水结束，三峡升船机运行时间每天8时至17时。
现在船只如何翻越三峡大坝？
三峡船闸有南北两线，相当于公路上的双车道，一线上行一线下行。每线船闸有5个闸室、6道人字闸门；相邻闸室地面高程相差22.6米，五个闸室呈楼梯状布置。
上游是第一闸室，下游是第五闸室。假如船舶要从下游驶向上游——船舶驶入第五闸室后，关闭下游人字门，通过地下输水系统，第四闸室往第五闸室内充水，当两个闸室内水面齐平时，打开上游人字门，船舶驶入第四闸室。依此类推，船舶就好像爬过一级又一级楼梯一样，通过第一闸室，驶向大坝上游航道。船舶下行的过程相反。
三峡船闸单个闸室净宽34米、长280米，是世界上最大的闸室，可同时容纳6艘3000吨级船舶。一艘船通过三峡船闸大约要3个多小时。
