23日上午，记者找到这座正在试运行的公共卫生间，翘角屋檐、粉墙黛瓦、仿古花窗，古色古香的建筑风格在绿树的掩映下，与护城河环古城健身步道融为一体。走进一扇自动感应玻璃门内，映入眼帘的是挂在墙上自动售纸机，让没有带卫生纸如厕的市民更加方便，墙壁以及地上都铺设了崭新的瓷砖，让人感觉整洁一新。墙上还安装了一个监控摄像头，监控摄像头面向门外，这样一来，可以保障前来如厕的市民的人身安全。在监控摄像头的上方，安装了中央空调出风口，市民一进入公共卫生间，便能感受到温度带来的变化。

据苏州市环卫处科技发展科科长助理黄嵘介绍，该处公厕建筑面积约90平方米，从今年8月初进行改建，安装了中央空调、热水器、新风系统等，公厕改建项目中标价为42万元，加上中央空调和负压式新风系统总共费用为50万元左右。公厕内的中央空调将参照公交车模式，一年开空调的时间为8个月，一天开10个小时左右，这样有利于节约用电。当初改建时决定安装中央空调，也是考虑到改善市民如厕环境，提高舒适度。接下来还将安装手机充电站，让市民在这里也能给手机充电，另外还会与红十字会合作安装急救箱等便民设施，市民健身时如果受到创伤，可以在这里进行简单包扎。公厕内配备两名保洁员，男女各一名，每天不间断对公厕进行保洁清扫。
许多家长独自带着异性孩子游玩，遇到孩子突然需要上厕所，但又无法离开大人自行解决，家长这时候通常会比较尴尬。一直以来，苏州的公共卫生间都只分男女。经常有爸爸带着女儿、妈妈带着儿子要上厕所，由于孩子无法单独如厕，而随同的成人又碍于性别原因无法一起进入公用卫生间，以致于如厕难成为此类市民的一大困扰。为此，在这个公厕改建项目中，苏州市环卫处根据实际情况特意规划设置了这样一个除男卫生间、女卫生间之外的第三卫生间，配备有成人和儿童两种规格的卫生设施，并加装了系有安全带的婴儿安全座椅以及专供为婴儿更换尿布使用的操作台，让带孩子如厕的家长不再尴尬和手忙脚乱。
据介绍，此次增设的第三卫生间有别于现有公厕的男女分区设置，其相当于一间“公厕家庭间”，用途主要为方便市民照顾家人如厕。除了配置大小两个马桶以及大小两个洗手池外，还装有婴儿安全座椅，大人在方便时，可以把宝宝放在上面用固定的扣带系好，然后就可以安心地上厕所了。同侧墙上还加装了专供为婴儿更换尿布的婴儿护理台，平时是合上的，用时只要从上往下拉开就行。此外，在成人马桶边上，还设有扶手，可以方便老人或残障人士使用。
“虽然目前使用的人并不多，但是许多市民从这里路过，一进来看到这个第三卫生间，都会觉得很贴心。”据这里的保洁员介绍，有的家长带着孩子到这里散步，进来首次体验了第三卫生间后，对此赞不绝口。
记者从苏州市环卫处了解到，像这种配备中央空调、热水器、新风系统并设有第三卫生间的公厕，目前在苏州属于首座。
