资料显示,大隅良典教授是细胞自噬研究的先驱,曾获得京都奖、盖尔德纳国际奖及日本人第2座威利奖。其专长生物学,特别是分子生物学领域。最知名的成就,是阐明细胞自噬的分子机制和生理功能。由于相关论文被大量引用,因此名列汤森路透引文桂冠奖。2006年,日本学士院高度评价大隅的成就:“一贯正面致力于细胞自噬的分子机制的阐明,完全不跟风”,并授予他日本最高学术奖日本学士院奖,2012年再以极高评价获得“诺贝尔奖的最后一哩路”京都奖基础科学部门。

本次大隅良典团队探明的细胞自噬启动机制,对预防和治疗由细胞自噬引发的癌症及神经类疾病有重要意义。细胞自噬有助于分解体内的老化物质和有害物质,维持生命健康,但细胞自噬的具体机制一直是一个谜,而大隅良典及其研究小组成员通过使用酵母进行实验观察到,Atg13蛋白质会与其他4种蛋白质通过网状结构进行连接,形成一个巨大的细胞自噬启动装置。这个装置能够创造出二重膜结构,仅吸收分解物质。在此基础上,该团队继续研究,最终发现了细胞自噬的启动机制。
