汤森路透知识产权与科技事业部认为，在科研界中，文献引用率愈高，代表有关研究的认受性愈广泛，愈大机会成为诺贝尔奖得主。

继2014年和2015年之后，今年的“引文桂冠奖”名单中连续第三年出现华人科学家─1983年生于河北省石家庄的张锋教授，以及来自香港中文大学的卢煜明教授均入选。张锋因其在老鼠和人类细胞中应用CRISPR-cas9基因编辑技术获此殊荣；卢煜明则因其在孕妇血浆血中检测到胎儿游离DNA，从而取得了无创产前检测的革命性成果而入榜。今年九月中旬，卢煜明才在有“中国诺贝尔奖”之称的未来科学大奖，拿下生命科学奖，抱走100万美元奖金。

截至目前，共有8位华裔科学家曾摘得“汤森路透引文桂冠奖”，首位获此殊荣的华裔科学家钱永健在当年即获得了诺贝尔化学奖。
