In January 2012, China railway construction group and the Djibouti Ministry of China and Turkey signed a contract of Djibouti. After 4 years of construction, achish rail officially opened.
And achish rail across Africa, from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in the West and East to the port of Djibouti, full range of 750 kilometers long, secondary standards of electrified railway construction in China, the design speed of 120 km, with a total investment of about 4 billion dollars (including rolling stock procurement). Ethiopia 70% funds 85% funds using the import and export Bank of China and Djibouti business loans.
Achish rail as "along the way" strategy of support is significant in promoting interconnection between countries. Ethiopia is landlocked country, is still at its initial stage of industrialization, main channels to rely on import and export goods port in neighbouring Djibouti, the absence of railway seriously affected economic development in Ethiopia. Nodes in Djibouti is located in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, a significant strategic value. President Guelleh has said, "to build our country into a regional transport hub, is our desire".
Ethiopian Prime Minister haiermaliyamu and President Guelleh of Djibouti congratulated the railway opened in his speech. In July 2016, China railway construction soil group and China railway Consortium signed achish rail operation and maintenance projects, after the opening of the railway, contractor status will also change operators, will provide the railway with 6 years of operation and management services.

系海外首条全产业链中国化铁路，成为“一带一路”标志性成果
10月5日11时47分，由中国铁建等中国企业承建的“新时期的坦赞铁路”亚吉铁路首趟列车，从埃塞俄比亚首都亚的斯亚贝巴发出。亚吉铁路是海外首条集设计标准、投融资、装备材料、施工、监理和运营管理全产业链“中国化”的铁路项目，标志着成套中国铁路“走出去”取得重大突破，是“一带一路”的标志性成果。
当天，亚吉铁路开通仪式在埃塞俄比亚拉布车站隆重举行。上午8:30，拉布车站彩旗飞舞，现场民众载歌载舞。习近平主席特使、国家发展和改革委员会主任徐绍史，埃塞总理海尔马里亚姆和吉布提总统盖莱、中国铁建董事长孟凤朝等出席通车仪式并致辞。多哥总统福雷等各界来宾近千人莅临现场。
2011年底，中国铁建中土集团等与埃塞铁路公司签署项目合同。2012年1月，中国铁建中土集团与吉布提财政部签署了吉布提段合同。经过4年多的建设，亚吉铁路正式开通。
亚吉铁路横跨非洲两国，西起埃塞首都亚的斯亚贝巴，东到吉布提港，全线长约750公里，采用中国二级电气化铁路标准建设，设计时速120公里，总投资约40亿美元（含机车车辆采购）。埃塞段70%的资金和吉布提段85%的资金使用中国进出口银行商业贷款。
亚吉铁路作为“一带一路”战略的重要支撑，在促进各国互联互通方面意义重大。埃塞属于内陆国家，工业化正处于起步阶段，进出口货物的主要通道依靠邻国吉布提的港口，铁路的缺位严重影响埃塞的经济发展。吉布提地处红海、亚丁湾中节点，战略价值显著。盖莱总统曾讲到，“将我们的国家建设成为一个地区交通枢纽，是我们的愿望”。
埃塞总理海尔马里亚姆和吉布提总统盖莱在致辞中均对铁路开通表示祝贺。习近平主席特使徐绍史在致辞中讲到，“亚吉铁路是三国合作的重要成果，是友谊之路。此次通车，既是中国与埃塞、吉布提合作的里程碑，又是新起点。”
亚吉铁路在实施过程中遇到过诸多挑战。吉布提段原定工期为60个月，应埃塞政府的要求，工期被压缩至25个月，使亚吉铁路成为中国企业在海外建设工期最短的铁路之一。通过亚吉铁路，中国铁建累计雇佣2万多名埃塞当地员工和5000多名吉布提当地员工。
2016年7月，中国铁建中土集团与中国中铁联营体成功签约亚吉铁路运营维护项目，在这条铁路通车后，承建商的身份也将变为运营商，将为这条铁路提供6年的运营管理服务。
通车仪式上，埃塞总理海尔马里亚姆、吉布提总统盖莱、多哥总统福雷、习近平主席特使徐绍史等200余人登上首趟列车“试乘”，体验中国化铁路带来的工业化文明。
