交通运输部南海保障中心西沙(南沙)航标处运保科副科长石峻峰告诉记者，华阳等5座灯塔均为大型多功能灯塔，可为船舶提供定位参考、航路指引、航海安全信息等高效的导航助航服务，有利于提升周边水域助航、通航管理以及应急搜救能力。
在建筑设计上，灯塔充分吸收了中国传统文化元素，并通过这些文化元素，向各国航海者传递着中华民族和平友好的美好愿望。
具体到每座灯塔，又各有特点，如华阳灯塔位于南沙群岛华阳礁上，整体为锥桶圆柱型钢筋混凝土结构，建筑顶层采用中国传统万字纹图案，寓意太阳与火，给予航行者光明与希望的指引;赤瓜灯塔位于南沙群岛赤瓜礁上，设计外观形似中国传统乐器喇叭，建筑顶层与次层设计融入中国传统雷纹图案，象征崇尚自然，寓意风调雨顺;渚碧灯塔位于南沙群岛渚碧礁，取名“棱”，设计立意取自中国特色传统文化太极八卦，八角形基座配圆形塔身，亦柔亦刚、亦攻亦防;永暑灯塔位于南沙群岛永暑礁，取名“鼎盛中华”，设计立意取自中国传统文化中的鼎，象征中华民族永远吉祥、国家鼎盛千秋;美济灯塔位于南沙群岛美济礁，取名“海上明烛”，寓意为矗立在海边的烛台，为人们指引方向、照亮航程，为航海者点亮一盏永不熄灭的烛光。
灯塔建成后，交通运输部还分别为五座灯塔写了《灯塔纪略》，以志纪念，其中提到了建灯塔的缘由：“南沙群岛古称“万里石塘”，据南宋《诸蕃图》、元《岛夷志略》等记载早列中国南海疆域。先民辟海上丝路，通达印、西二洋;素为中国渔民耕海牧渔之所，《更路簿》历历可考……为策安全，着于长远，建灯塔引航渡，工不迂缓，竭力施行，立塔于斯。”
5座灯塔都扼守南海航道要冲，周边海域常年气象险恶，飓风浪涌。中国外交部发言人华春莹在就南沙华阳礁和赤瓜礁灯塔启用答记者问时就表示，灯塔建设将为航经相关海域的船舶提供高效的导航助航服务，大大提高南海海域船舶航行安全。

同时，灯塔建设难度也堪称最大，所处海域气象条件多变，作业不得不面临高温、高辐射、高湿度、高氯离子和缺淡水、缺土壤的恶劣环境。它们的关注度也堪称最高，由于南海是联系中国与世界各地非常重要的海上通道，灯塔的建成填补了南沙水域民用导航设施的空白，大大改善南海水域通航环境。
此外，灯塔的技术也可谓最先进，据了解，灯塔夜间发白光，灯光射程可达22海里，还安装了船舶自动识别系统(AIS)基站和甚高频(VHF)基站，可为航经该水域的各国船舶提供航路指引、安全信息、应急救助等公益服务，降低船舶航行风险，减少海损事故发生。

石峻峰回忆说，在行船奔赴南海的途中，水域海况复杂，如果遇到南海台风期，则是狂风肆虐，巨浪汹涌，执行任务的团队成员都是躺在拥挤的船舱里，几乎所有的人都晕船、呕吐，不思茶饭，不能入睡。南海灯塔建设团队就是在这样恶劣的条件下克服困难坚持工作。“但在灯塔点亮的那一刻，大家认为所有的辛苦都是值得的!”

这并不是海南灯塔首次登上作为“国家名片”的特种邮票。
海南最古老的灯塔是始建于光绪十九年(1893年)的临高灯塔和海口秀英灯塔。
1760年，台湾澎湖列岛中渔翁岛上建立了中国第一座灯塔，而海南岛虽然有着众多的港口、险滩和礁石，灯塔却迟迟未建，仅在航道暗礁多的临高角岸边设有古风烽火台，直到近代西方列强用坚船利炮打开中国门户，为控制琼州海峡，保证海运通道顺畅，英国才首先选择海南岛的临高角和秀英港码头，以“琼海关”名义圈地建塔，使海南灯塔建设开篇充满苦涩。
1997年5月，临高角灯塔被国际航标协会列入“世界一百座历史文物灯塔”，2002年5月18日，国家邮电部首次发行一套5枚的《历史文物灯塔》特种邮票，海南临高角灯塔就是其中之一。
文昌木兰头灯塔同样历史悠久，据传历史上木兰角海域水文情况复杂，又没有明确航标，被海上渔民称为“鬼门关”，遇险的船只木板时常被冲到木兰角海岸上，堆积滩头腐烂掉，故称“木烂头”，自明代南京礼部尚书王弘诲邀众并奏朝廷拨款在七星岭上兴建斗柄塔后，有了明确的航标，海难事故才很少发生，也不再有“木烂头”的现象，遂更名为“木兰头”。
现在的木兰头灯塔，为白色圆柱形钢筋混凝土结构，外观雄伟壮丽，堪称亚洲第一的现代化大型航标灯塔。2006年5月22日，国家邮政局发行了以现代灯塔为主题的《现代灯塔》特种邮票一套4枚，其中第4枚邮票主图即为木兰头灯塔。
有着中国“灯塔”专题集邮第一人之称的伍穗生老人告诉记者，建国后中国专门为灯塔发行的三套共计14枚特种邮票中，海南灯塔每次均有入选，且占了7枚也就是一半的分量，特别是这次发行的《中国灯塔》一套5枚全都是地处南沙的海南灯塔。
从半殖民地时期标志的临高角灯塔到现代化的木兰头灯塔，再到傲然挺立南沙指引航路的五座灯塔，三套灯塔特种邮票，再续了一部海南灯塔的变迁史，更折射出国力的成长壮大。《灯塔纪略》一书中也不无自豪地写到：“一灯高悬，明照夜空，行船悉得指引，克险为夷。而经略海洋之意，守土保疆之志，合作和平之愿，跃然于南海之上矣。”
