十多年来，解放军总医院网瘾治疗中心主任陶然却一直坚持“网瘾是一种心理疾病”的观点。针对这个命题，他发表了70多篇论文。他为“网络游戏成瘾”制定的9条诊断标准被收录到美国精神病学会2013年发布的《精神疾病诊断与统计手册》（第五版）中。
虽然这份手册指出，网络游戏成瘾“缺乏定义标准”“缺乏流行病学研究”，值得进一步研究，不属于已确定的精神疾病。但陶然觉得，这就像网瘾入精神疾病的“草案”，“会在下一次修正后被纳入正式的目录中。”
他对记者说，当今很多人都不承认网瘾是一种病，根源是把精神病和精神疾病画上了等号，“精神病一般指的是严重的精神障碍，比如精神分裂症”。
根据一份权威报告：中国15岁以上人口中，各类精神疾病患者人数超过1亿人，其中1600万人是重性精神障碍患者。
在陶然眼中，精神问题满足两条就能称得上疾病：导致社会功能丧失，例如不能工作，不能上学等；给自己和他人带来了痛苦。
对魏子韩来说，给自己带来的痛苦，可能是从好学生一下沦落到差生的落差感。
“初中我是年级前五，高中打游戏，连中间都进不去了。”
那时候，他迷上了一款名叫《梦幻西游》的游戏。花上15元，就能在网吧待一晚上，之后他干脆就住在网吧里。

要规范机构先要有治疗标准，制定治疗标准的前提是承认网瘾是病

在他看来，之所以出现电休克治疗，正是因为治疗网络成瘾的方法比较混乱，应该将网瘾纳入精神疾病范畴，由卫生部门统一收治。
他面前却是一个“死循环”：要规范机构先要有治疗标准，制定治疗标准的前提是承认网瘾是病。
几年前，原卫生部新闻发言人表示，目前并没有哪一家医疗机构是获批专门治疗网瘾的。对于其他并非医疗机构的，由其他部门审批，谁审批，谁监管。
在网瘾治疗中心时，魏子韩几乎每天都被送进电击室。他的伙食顿顿都是白菜豆腐。“没什么油，不吃就要送去电击。”母亲就在一旁默默监督。
一名“患者”告诉记者，“如果把现在的低频脉冲治疗仪比作30根针通电扎你，那‘第一代’电休克治疗仪就是300、400根针”。

一个刚进入网瘾中心的孩子在哭闹后平静下来，被人带去做身体检查。
