如果汽车启动后软件检测到方向盘并未有任何活动，则认定该车正处于实验室测试阶段，将启动二氧化碳排放量低水平模式。

当方向盘转动角度超过15°后，系统将切换至正常行驶模式。而在加州空气资源委员会（CARB）进行的测试中，因为转动方向盘而导致该系统无法进行作弊，于是奥迪的这一造假行为就被揪了出来。

截至目前，加州空气资源委员会（CARB）和大众集团都未就此事进行回应。
