微信买卖电影的操作方式是，微信添加某些卖电影的代理为好友，通过红包等在线支付，代理再将资源通过网络云盘分享给买家。
电影《盗墓笔记》上映时，大学生郭某通过某视频网站搜索相关预告片时搜索到一个电影片段，视频的右下角写着“观看完整全片请加微信号XX”的水印。郭某随即添加了该微信号，以8元的价格买下了完整版电影蓝光版的资源。相比去电影院看电影需要花费几十元，郭某说花几块钱就能在宿舍观看到完整的电影，既省钱又省时间。

微信卖电影，看来还挺受大学生“欢迎”。一家微信号曾介绍，有时候热门电影千余人购买。另一家微信号则透露，韩国电影《釜山行》高清版卖5元，有300人次购买。
营销：招募大学生代理 形成完整产业链
通过网络，北青报记者查找到一个名为“XXX”的微信号发布的微信卖电影招募代理的信息。该团队称实行“一本万利”的终身代理模式：一旦代理之后会把现有的1.7T影片资源拷贝，再将代理人加入团队的微信代理群，十个管理员每天负责更新影片资源和发放朋友圈用的对应素材，比如：电影海报、推荐文字等。区别于传统网商，不用囤货，可以无限制自由转卖。
该微信号号称每天更新的推荐影片都是由后台管理员修复无毒无广告之后下发到团队代理资源群的，电影海报和推荐文字都由团队来做，代理就天天转发管理员的朋友圈就行了，所有的事情都由团队代劳。此外，团队还会给代理进行微信培训，教他们如何推销电影。
据了解，该团队目前已经有四个微信代理群，发展了近千名代理，以在校大学生为主。

在接受北青报记者采访时，知名编剧、中国电影文学学会副会长汪海林分析，“之所以这种现象会在大学生群体中兴起，在于大学生日常通过网络形成的观影习惯。消费者可能知道观看盗版是一种不好的行为，但是没有意识到买卖盗版影片资源其实是一种犯罪行为。作为大学生，出于对《著作权法》的遵守和对著作者们的尊重，应该支持正版。”
汪海林表示，如果大学生被招募成为微信销售盗版电影代理，当交易数量达到一定量时，将需要承担相应的刑事责任。他提醒，大学生尚未接触社会，或许是只看到眼前的“商机”将其视为一种补贴生活费用的兼职，而未了解事件背后的严重性。如此，有可能因小失大，走上违法的道路。汪海林呼吁：“消费者应该尊重电影创作者们的工作，尊重自己喜欢的作品、导演和演员，支持正版，形成一种良好的观影习惯。”
