为何要改变传统一个笼舍一种动物的饲养方式呢？耿广耀表示，在自然界，不同的动物就是生活在一起的，因此，混养是模拟原生环境，进行生态化展示，还可以向公众阐述生物多样性的意义，同时也增加了观赏效果。
据了解，上海动物园将选择合适动物，逐步扩大混养范围，让游客更多感受自然界动物生活的原貌。比如，待场地平整好以后，赤大袋鼠和红颈袋鼠也将搬到一起住。不过，老虎、狮子等食肉动物的混合饲养暂时未考虑。
