值得一提的是，日本追求政治大国的步伐也因此被打断。
2005年，在日本递交入常申请后，一场由韩国发起的，在全球范围内共有四千万人参与的，反对日本入常的签名请愿活动开始了。
联合国于6月30号收到了这份请愿书。请愿者要求日本对在第二次世界大战中犯下的罪行公开道歉并作出赔偿，否则就反对日本成为联合国安理会常任理国。
而日本政府至今是没有道歉的。其修改教科书、参拜靖国神社等一系列活动也昭示其心中并无悔意。
战后日本政府并没有正式道歉，其参拜的靖国神社中仍供奉着侵华战争中的甲级战犯。
