2012年是中国非物质文化遗产法实施的第一年，相关专项法规、实施细则、地方保护条例相继出台，中国非物质文化遗产保护进入依法科学保护的新阶段。截至2012年，中国共有1986名国家级非物质文化遗产项目代表性传承人，分布于民间文学、传统音乐、传统舞蹈、传统戏剧、曲艺、传统体育、传统美术、传统技艺、传统医药及民俗。与此同时，设立了12个国家级文化生态保护实验区，对具有重要价值和鲜明特色的文化形态进行整体性保护。
