Intel waves throw those opportunities

Intel waves throw those opportunities-Intel, intel-IT information Intel waves roll those opportunities

About Intel, people first thought was countless PC ad's signature sound the alarm at the end of this well-known voices from the side that Intel's dominance in the PC chip industry. However as has swept the world's semiconductor giants, Intel Mobile chip market advances in recent years have failed to have much, people had to have mixed feelings, "creation".

Founded in 1968, Intel Corporation, in the course of development of 45, although the chip industry has made remarkable achievements, but also missed a lot of opportunities, which include television, mobile phones, tablet computers , electronic toys, streaming media and consumer electronics, among others.

Technology website CNET recently wrote to Intel missed a great opportunity for stocktaking and analysis, the following is the subject of the article.

The former Chief Executive of Intel keleige·beiruite (Craig Barrett) have Intel PC processor chip business to a desert in a "poisonous wood", this poisonous shrubs not only their own body and big, also secrete a toxin to poison plants around.

Mr Barrett was about 10 years ago, said in an article published: "Intel's microprocessor business is a fantastic business, with significant profit and excellent market position in this field, competitors simply did not have the strength to compete for resources and Intel to make a profit. ”

But Mr Barrett is 2000 years or so overbearing Intel, could be exactly the feeling of all Intel on their laurels, repeatedly missed opportunities left behind by competitors. In Internet TV business, for example, earlier this year, Intel Intel Media Internet TV business (Intel media) ailike·hugesi, the head of (Erik Huggers) had said at a Technology Conference, Intel will be available at the end of 2013, video equipment and related services, but a few months later, Hu Gesi has said he is Intel's Internet TV service to find a suitable buyer, Sources say United States mobile operators Verizon may offer the service, the two sides will reach an agreement by the end of this year.

So what was the reason Intel is so big changes? If Intel wanted to launch Internet TV business, you will need to pay expensive licensing fees to purchase content, this amount is clearly outside Intel's expected, and there is no indication that Intel media to profit in a short time, and Intel's new CEO bulaien·keziannike (Brian Krzanich) don't want to assume the risk of the business.

But Intel is adventurous in certain areas, such as the case where the company has not been accurately forecast demand would spend billions of dollars to start a new chip research and development projects, and so on. But over the years, business other than Intel processors are reluctant to take risks. In 1998, Intel has aggressively launched a new business beyond PC chips, once, before Apple's "hands on" tablets and smart-phone business, raised in the Amazon still sell books and CD when try to cloud computing business, and even dabble in electronic toys and consumer electronics such as digital cameras.

But then it turns out that Intel always before they became popular dip, has failed to achieve a breakthrough beyond the PC chip. In the global PC market gradually into the trough of today, Intel continues to stick to the core business of PC chips, which means Intel will need to take greater risks. Although we don't know how Intel will face the risk of, but be sure Intel missed a lot of opportunities over the past few years, as evidenced in the following aspects.

TV

Intel's development in the TV industry is "fight repeatedly crushed." Currently sold by Intel's Internet TV service is not the company's first TV products, as early as 2005, Intel has launched Viiv Viiv digital home platform, the platform allows video and music on your TV, PC or portable device for seamless transfer. But it is unfortunate, equipped with PC Viiv platform subsequently replaced with Windows Media Center, Intel also failed to launch a follow-up product, Viiv brand began to diminish people's vision.

Subsequently, Intel has become the Google TV, smart TV, such as Sony and Logitech's early partners, offer processor support for these manufacturers of set-top box products, but these products are ultimately ended in failure, Logitech thought developed jointly by Google TV set-top box with Google is "a huge mistake", Intel at the end of 2011 to abandon TV related businesses.

Mobile phone

Obviously, Intel in smartphones can be said to be badly beaten, the currently available on most mobile devices use chips from rival ARM design, manufactured by Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics, while Intel only got "the remains of a meal".

Intel earlier had ample opportunity to have something big in mobile chip business, as early as 1998, the company acquired ARM chip design right, and the purchase of chipmaker DSP Communications (later renamed by Intel XScale), also courted, including BlackBerry, Palm and Motorola's largest customers.

Over the next four years, Intel has spent more than $ 11 billion to buy a number of mobile and communications chip companies, but it remains hard to shake the dominance of rivals such as Qualcomm. Concerns about intensifying business competition in its core PC chips, Intel decided in 2006 to its cell phone chip business for $ 600 million price "sale" to the Marvell Semiconductor, this decision was subsequently proven to be perpetrated in Intel's history, "one of the biggest mistakes". Intel launched its own Smartphone and Tablet-oriented X86 processor, but its design and hardly any advantage at all in shipments, but Intel said the company's Smartphone business in 2014 will be improved, but exactly how remains to be seen.

Tablet PC

Apple is not the "iPad", the founder of early in 1998, Intel began to develop its own tablet computer product, the product was named "Intel Pad" or "IPAD". Similar to Apple's iPad, Intel's tablet also comes with a touch-sensitive screen and ARM processors, but Intel device has a stylus and only supporting device for a PC machine, the tablet can be via PC connected to the Internet, Intel finally decided that the product named "Intel Web tablet (Intel Web Tablet)".

At that time, the Intel "IPAD" products has been boxed ready to ship to Circuit City and other retail partners, but Intel suddenly decided to cancel the project because Intel for Tablet PC partners are very unhappy with the advent of the computer, they do not want Intel launched the hardware products to compete. Eventually Intel will be the tablet at a very low internal sold it to their employees. In 2010, Apple officially released iPad tablet computer, in calculating the market set off a process of change, and Intel has had to move from "potential leader" became "poor ass."

But as Windows8 release, Intel has been facing uncertain prospects of cooperation with Tablet PC manufacturers, but if the prior to Apple's entry into the Tablet market, Intel may have "merit".

Electronic toys

As early as in the late 1990 of the 20th century, Intel began to expand their business in the consumer electronics market, particularly in the children's area. In 1998, Intel decided to toy manufacturers Mattel (Mattel) in Poland to establish a "smart Toy Lab", this laboratory was known as "the combination of Mattel toys and marketing advantages of Intel in terms of expertise and advantages", create high-tech toys for children.

In 1999, Intel and Mattel have jointly launched the QX3 Computer microscope for $ 99 and $ 69 the Me2Cam virtual game system, although higher prices than similar products, the QX3 was named 1999 Christmas "the best-selling toy Media Player".

However, in May 2000, Intel and Mattel decided to go our separate ways, because Mattel wants to continue to focus on traditional low-tech toys, and Intel, with more "Toy Lab" on the input, and over the next few months has introduced two new products. But there is no support of Mattel, the business began to dwindle, and Intel in early 2002 decided to "Toy Lab" sold to Prime Entertainment.

Other consumer electronics

In the late 1990 of the 20th century and early 21st century, Intel made multiple attempts throughout the entire consumer electronics market, including digital cameras, wireless keyboard, mouse and portable music players, but ultimately all of these consumer electronics products are for PC service, its aim is to enhance the company's competitiveness in key markets.

"Intel is provided by creative, fresh, interesting and inexpensive consumer electronics," Vice President of Intel's connected Products Division at Tang·huaite ' (Don Whiteside) said in a press release issued in October 2001. In addition, the Intel Pocket Concert was also released in early 2001 music player, launched in October 2001, the Intel pocket digital camera (Intel Pocket Digital PC Camera). Around the same time, Apple introduced the first iPod, to move downward trend become dominate in music player.

Eventually Intel decided to cut consumer electronics research and development project, in October 2001, Intel announced that it would phase out its digital cameras, audio players and toy business, after the existing inventory is sold out or stop manufacturing, says why are consumer electronics products do not meet the requirements of long-term development of the company.

Network device

From the beginning of May to in the late 1990 of the 20th century, and the rapid development of the Internet has sparked concern over the prospects for the PC market, analysts and even pessimistic to assume that "most computing tasks will be completed on the Web, and the PC will be the fate of being cut".

This a forecast let Intel in 21st century early launched has by background terminal Red Hat Linux provides support of network equipment, but at market Shang has full has mass of competition opponent, again plus Intel only provides products, service are outsourcing to other company, so the equipment almost nothing advantage can statements, 2001 end of, Intel announced will eliminated this paragraph network equipment products and other consumption electronic products business.

Virtual host

Intel launched the "Intel Online" virtual hosting service, Amazon is a new company. Intel offers as early as 1996 to set up a data center to help other companies operating Web sites, but was opposed by the company executives. Two years later, when he was Chairman of the NI·zhanmusi Chief Technical Assistant Rachel (Renee James) and CEO Andy Grove (Andy Grove) again refers to Web hosting services, which were approved by the company and James in 1999 construction plans of the first Datacenter.

Intel hopes its own data center can help large electricity providers and telecom operators to process online transactions, and also to grasp the development trend of e-commerce while avoiding virtual terminal replaces PC that may occur in the future. But two years later, after failing to attract enough customers, Intel had to shut down the business, while at the beginning of 2001 halted iCat managed business for small and medium businesses.

Today, Web hosting and cloud computing has become the two major trends in technology, and Amazon has developed into a joke most of the industry, analysts estimate that the industry produces about 4 billion dollars in revenue each year.

Streaming media

In May 2000, Intel has launched the Internet media services, was aimed at providing a platform for streaming media network platform, according to Intel corporate users with ads, shareholder services such as Web conferencing and online training courses.

Intel initially planned to invest 200 million dollars in the project, in the United States and the European streaming media centres, and installed in the primary site servers globally, and the service's early customers such as Nasdaq.com and Golf Magazine. However, the business can be described as "untimely" streaming media industry as a whole in 2001, rapidly cooled, many Servicers are reduced as a result of the scale, tended to Intel in February 2001 and shut down the service.

Word, despite Intel has never no stop had in PC chip zhiwai of field constantly tries to, but met difficult on wanted to "walk away and back" of practices let its missed has too more too more of development opportunity, that to now also just a "chip manufacturer", but we also is hope future can see a in other field "exhibition take" of Intel, see Intel can through strong of technology research strength to for world brings more of change and surprise.
