据了解，普查的主要内容包括单位基本属性、从业人员、财务状况、生产经营情况、生产能力、原材料和能源及主要资源消耗、科技活动情况等。普查登记时，普查对象须提供《营业执照》、《税务登记证》和《组织机构代码证》或其他有关证照，以便普查人员开展证照图像信息采集工作。

在本次普查中，年收入2000万元以上的的工业法人单位、有资质的建筑业法人单位，年主营业务收入200万元及以上的批发业法人单位，年主营业务收入500万元以上的零售业法人单位，年主营业额200万元以上的住宿和餐饮法人单位，房地产开发法人单位，重点服务业法人单位，都需要自行登录国家统计联网直报平台直接填写普查表。
而如果普查对象拒绝接受普查；提供不完整经济资料，或未按时提供经济普查资料的，将进行处罚。企事业组织将面临5万元以下，个体经营户将面临1万元以下的罚款。
所有普查数据将被保密
武汉大学经济学院副院长李燕萍表示，此次盘点经济家底对国家意义重大。通过普查可以摸清我国目前的产业组织、产业结构、产业发展和规模等情况，掌握我国经济发展的新变化。也对国家转结构、调经济是否达到预期效果进行了检验。
“对企业来说，通过普查数据可以引导企业正确判断行业发展和市场走向。对社会公众而言，通过普查数据可以引导公众正确了解社会经济发展状况。” 李燕萍说。
