带着皮帽、身形瘦削的他，看上去精神矍铄，身体状况不错。他告诉记者，2004年时，他一周中有6天要来纪念馆当志愿者，现在年纪大了，从2008年起，每周来一天，干些维持秩序、保洁、给年轻人讲解历史的活。
“退休拿3600元，够吃够用。这些活不吃力，我也很高兴，能为国家做点好事。我的愿望就是下一代记住历史，勿忘国耻，振兴中华。”
他还告诉记者他的“生死观”：“当年，我没有被杀死，经历了这段历史，对我来说，就是好好活下去。”
虽然已是76岁高龄，白发苍苍的阮定东老人，作为今年新认定的南京大屠杀幸存者，还成了健在100多名幸存者中最年轻的一位。早上刚刚去“哭墙”摸过爷爷的名字，他说话语气还有些沉重。

今年7月，阮定东的爷爷的名字阮家田，作为新增遇难者名录中的一个，被刻入侵华日军南京大屠杀遇难同胞纪念馆黑色石壁中，阮定东一家人有了祭奠亲人的地方。
一边揉着自己的脑袋，一边囔囔抱怨找不到纪念馆出口，今年83岁的刘素珍本想去纪念馆工作人员那里咨询医药费报销事宜，不曾想迷了路，还一头撞在玻璃门上。
“身体一年不如一年了，现在来都有些气喘了。”她感叹着。
老人今天四点半起床，独自一人，拎着布袋，提着小板凳，转了一趟公交车，赶到纪念馆参加集会活动。“两个小女儿一个在北京，一个在淮安，不麻烦她们了。”
小板凳也没派上用场。“(集会上的幸存者们)第一排坐轮椅，我在后面，他们都站着，我也不好意思(坐)。”
说起晚年生活，老人乐呵呵的，笑起来满脸皱褶，露出仅剩的几颗牙齿。“看病时，我和医生护士有说有笑，她们都喜欢我，都说我好，我心态好。”
老人说，自己独居，平时社区居委会经常打电话来问候，她也经常出门和楼下的同伴们晒太阳、聊天。
“现在的生活和过去已经不能比，过去太苦了，现在太好了”，但她又伸手去抠眼窝中的泪水。
没说多久，老人起身，提着小板凳，佝偻着腰走出门去赶公交车，并婉拒记者护送的请求：“没事的，我能行。”(完)
