据国土资源部地质勘查司副司长车长波介绍，此次发现的天然气水合物样品具有埋藏浅、厚度大、类型多、纯度高四个主要特点。通过实施23口钻探井，控制天然气水合物分布面积55平方公里，将天然气水合物折算成天然气，控制储量1000-1500亿立方米，相当于特大型常规天然气规模。
1立方米的天然气水合物分解后可生成约164-180立方米的天然气。是一种高效清洁能源，被誉为21世纪的绿色能源。
对于下一步工作开展，国土资源部地质勘查司副司长车长波说，国土资源部将按照国家规划部署要求，全面组织实施中国海域、陆域天然气水合物资源勘查评价，扎扎实实做好三项主要工作， 一是加快天然气水合物勘查评价和重点靶区钻探取芯工作；二是开展天然气水合物成藏机理和富集规律等理论研究；三是加大天然气水合物试开采及环境评价等关键技术攻关力度，力争早日实现天然气水合物开发利用，为提高中国清洁能源保障程度而努力。
