吴石，1894年8月生于福建省闽侯县螺洲乡(今福州市仓山区螺洲镇吴厝村)。1911年参加辛亥革命，先后以全校第一名的成绩毕业于武昌预备军官学校、保定军官学校、日本炮兵学校和日本陆军大学。抗日战争期间，负责对日情报工作，后任第四战区中将参谋长等职，深受蒋介石嘉许。吴石很早就对中国共产党有好感。1938年8月，在武汉会战期间主持“战地情报参谋训练班”，专门邀请周恩来、叶剑英来讲游击战争。1947年4月，经何遂(时任国民政府立法院军事委员会委员长，“西安事变”后一直积极帮助共产党)介绍，吴石和中共华东局书记刘晓等人见面，与共产党正式建立联系。1949年7月，吴石奉调台湾“国防部参谋次长”，临行前将298箱保存无损的国民党军事绝密档案呈献给解放军。1949年10月，解放军攻打金门和舟山群岛一度失利。为尽快了解敌情变化，华东局决定派长期在上海、香港从事情报工作的女共产党员朱枫赴台与吴石联系。
朱枫，1905年12月出生于浙江镇海名门。1937年“七七抗战”开始，朱枫毅然投入抗日救亡运动。1938年初投身中共领导的出版事业——新知书店参加革命，此后多次变卖家产，资助革命出版事业和帮助台湾爱国志士李友邦筹建“台湾抗日义勇队”等。先后在武汉、上饶、桂林、重庆、上海、香港等地从事中共地下工作，周旋于国民党党政军界高层之间，收集情报、营救同志、筹措经费。1944年底加入中国共产党。1948年，奉调香港，在出色完成任务即将回内地与亲人团聚前夕，于1949年11月毅然接受华东局指派赴台。
1949年11月27日，朱枫抵台，即与中共台湾省工委书记蔡孝乾取得联系。一周后，朱枫来到吴石将军的寓所，从他手中接过绝密军事情报的缩微胶卷。内容包括《台湾战区战略防御图》；最新编绘的舟山群岛、大小金门《海防前线阵地兵力、火器配备图》；台湾海峡、台湾海区海流资料；台湾岛各个战略登陆点的地理资料分析；海军基地舰队部署、分布情况；空军机场并机群种类、飞机架数。另外，还有《关于大陆失陷后组织全国性游击武装的应变计划》等。
几天后，这批情报通过香港迅速传递到华东局，其中，几份绝密情报还呈送给毛泽东主席。当毛主席听说这些情报是一位秘密女特派员赴台从一位国民党上层人士“密使一号”那里取回时，当即嘱咐有关领导：“一定要给他们记上一功哟！”毛泽东激动之余赋诗一首，并嘱咐一定要传到那边(指台湾)：“惊涛拍孤岛，碧波映天晓。虎穴藏忠魂，曙光迎来早。”
然而，1950年2月，由于蔡孝乾被捕叛变，岛内大批中共地下党员被捕杀，朱枫、吴石及陈宝仓、聂曦也先后被捕遇害。1951年，华东局组织部批准朱枫为革命烈士，上海市人民政府颁发证书。1973年，为表彰吴石将军为祖国统一大业做出的特殊贡献，周恩来总理力排众议，在毛泽东主席的支持下，由国务院追认吴石将军为革命烈士。
在吴石、朱枫等4人的塑像前，也有一段铭文，标题为“光影”，其中有一句“你的名字无人知晓，你的功勋永垂不朽。你们，在烈火中永生。”
梦想从未终止

在广场两端的花岗岩墙壁上，分别镌刻了两段铭文，标题分别为“家国”和“信义”。
“家国”曰：“我们把祖国唤为母亲，我们把战友视作兄弟，为了家园不再遭受荼毒，为了亲人不再蒙受苦难，选择远行，选择战斗，追求光明，追求和平。”
“信义”曰：“因为皈依信仰，坦然面对生死；因为心怀大爱，无悔血沃中华。中共地下党员钟浩东夫人蒋碧玉面对保密局特务平静地说：我们难逃一死，但是，我们能为伟大的祖国、伟大的党在台湾流第一滴血，我们将光荣地死去！”
这是无名英雄纪念广场的铭文里第一次出现英雄的名字——蒋碧玉，同时也是一个比“朱枫”更加陌生的名字。她有一张在人海里再平凡不过的面孔，干练的齐耳短发，眼光温柔却不失果敢坚毅；说话声音不高不快，但每句话、每个字都是那么坚定无悔。
63年弹指一挥间。当年笼罩海峡上空的炮火硝烟已散去，直航两岸的班机客轮以及来来往往的人潮成为亮丽的风景。尤其是两岸“三通”的实现，开启了两岸关系大交流、大合作、大发展、大融合的历史新篇章。我们的祖国正在举世瞩目中和平崛起，海峡两岸以及全世界的中华儿女，正面临比历史上任何时期都更接近中华民族伟大复兴目标的新时代。
