近日，前外交部长李肇星首部外事回忆作品《说不尽的外交》由中信出版社出版。卸任外长后，素有“平民外交家”“诗人外交家”之称的李肇星，历时三年，几易其稿，回顾个人成长之路，讲述中国外交的真相。在书中，李肇星全面回顾了自己近半个世纪的外交生涯，记录了与各国政要的私人交往、应对各种外交问题的丰富经验，并首次披露美国炸馆事件、“9·11”恐怖袭击、中美汇率问题博弈等重大外交事件背后的内幕。
谈到本书的出版缘起，李肇星说，四年前的一天，他在一所大学和年轻朋友聊天，有学生说：李部长，我是你的粉丝，读过你的诗集《青春中国》、散文集《从未名到未名》，可没发现你有外交方面的书，请问你打算写吗？我很期待。这个问题一下难倒了李肇星，于是他只好绕弯子说：谢谢你喜欢我的书，我的那些书都是业余水平的，都是业余时间在飞机上、火车上、汽车里写的。“听到那么真诚的话，看到那么渴望的眼神，我还真动了心：这些同学的话像批评我‘不务正业’。我小时候的理想是当记者或作家，但近半个世纪以来外交才是我的本职工作，理应干什么吆喝什么。”后来，在参考了外交界前辈与同事们的外交著作后，决定以自己的外交经历与中国外交几十年风风雨雨为主线，以中国外交布局为纲、自己的亲历与思考为目，叙说中国外交事儿，最重要的是，要“写一本老百姓看得懂、读得进的书”。
