对于成本高昂的探月工程究竟是否有实际意义，吴伟仁先举了一组数字说明中国探月工程的成本：美国阿波罗登月工程官方称投入250亿美元，实际是不止这个数字，共持续10多年，平均每年投入的钱占美国当年GDP的2%至2.5%，而中国探月工程目前的投入约占我国当年GDP的万分之几，“所以我们投入的钱不是很多。”
