10时58分，海军航空兵飞行大队长高翔和黄凤生双机从海口机场起飞迎战。时隔多年，高翔仍然清楚地记得当时战斗情形：美军飞机在白马井以西中国领海上空忽进忽出，擦边挑衅。为避免被美机发现，双机降低高度，占据阳光位置，隐蔽接近。11时19分，美机深深侵入中国领空。11时31分35秒，在地面引导下，高翔在左前方8公里处先敌发现美军F—104C飞机正在转弯，他立即便切半径直扑过去。黄凤生掩护进入攻击。高翔直迫美机，进入有效射击距离。但他提醒自己：“近些，再近些，一次攻击命中，打它个空中开花。”直到瞄准具光环完全套住F—104C，距离291米，他才按下炮钮，一个长射打到距离74米，命中美机，打到39米才脱离，美机当空起火爆炸。美军飞行员跳伞，落入文昌以东七洲洋海面。老民兵，当年琼崖纵队游击队员符气合，第一个从水里捞救起美军飞行员，把他俘获。这个军号4360的菲利普•史密斯美军上尉赶紧举起双手投降，交出随身武器，捧上美国国防部发给的，用13国文字写的“请求帮助”的救命书，请求不要杀他。
高翔逼近射击，美机爆炸的碎片溅击高翔的飞机，右发动机空中停俥。高翔沉着地驾驶飞机单发飞行，安全着陆。高翔荣立一等功。
史密斯被俘后，心有余悸说：“太可怕了，这样近距离开炮，不可想象!”他惶恐不安，直到中国人民解放军宽待俘虏，派医生为他做健康检查，才稍稍安定下来。高翔参加了对他的审问，会心地笑了。
当年国庆节，高翔和符气合来北京观礼，毛泽东握着符气合的手说：“你们打得好!军民团结如一人，试看天下谁能敌。”
这次战斗，给了美国政府一个明确无误的警告：侵越战争一旦扩大到中国，后果只会比他们在朝鲜战争的失败更惨，更令人难堪。
毛泽东决策坚决打击入侵的美国飞机，指挥新中国海军第一次对外军作战，‘四两拨千斤’，以有限的兵力，遏制了美国把战火扩大到中国的图谋，有力地支援了越南人民抗美救国斗争，维护了亚洲和世界和平。后来，美国人民也逐步觉醒，一致反对卷入越南战争，终于迫使美国政府从越南撤出美国军队。海南岛空战，过去已近50年，更明白地显示出当年的作战意义。
1989年，菲利普？史密斯访问中国，特意要求与高翔见面，
高翔回忆当时情况说：“1965年他被打下来，从文昌送到海口，在南海舰队航空兵干部食堂审问他，我也坐在旁边参加审问。1989年，他是作为客人到中国来的，我在上海欢迎他。”
我问道:“你们见面，都说些什么？”
高翔笑笑说：“他一见面，先感谢我，说是我只打落飞机，
没打人，手下留情。他还告诉我，当时他绝想不到会被中国飞机打着了，直到飞机一震，有一种斧头斫铁桶似的感觉，这才明白被中国飞机打中了。他问我当时是什么心情。我说，当时你不经允许，跑到人家屋子里来了，跑到我们国家花园里，连门票都不买，那只有当强盗，当非法入侵者办了。我打胜了，我很高兴。今天，你作为朋友来作客，我欢迎你，我更高兴。史密斯先生说:‘你是为了自己的国家，而我当时是不愿到越南作战的。尼克松访问中国后，毛主席、周恩来总理善意地把我放回去。我在中国等于休假七年。回去后补发了薪金。只是我的妻子，经不起长期寂寞，早早离开了。’我向他说，我也损失不小。我出发到海南作战的时候，我的女儿到飞机场送行，当时我又一个孩子快要出生了，我也不能够在家照顾了。史密斯说：‘按美国人习惯，妻子生孩子，丈夫必须在身边照顾啊!’我说，中国何尝不是如此!我们都付出了大的感情代价。就我们中国人来说，我们是不要战争的。但是，许多年来，总是别人把战争强加到我们头上，我们不得已才拿起枪。中国有一首歌唱道：‘朋友来了有好酒，若是豺狼来了有猎枪。’史密斯连连点头。”
高翔继续说：“把酒言欢中，我问史密斯，你在中国多年，对什么事印象最深？史密斯脱口而出说，‘干杯!’我们俩人不由得哈哈大笑起来。酒酣耳热，我向他说，打仗你不如中国人，作为朋友，你干杯也不如我，不信，我们俩现在就比试比试。”
高翔停了停说:“史密斯还说：‘把我从海上救起来的老人也
没有杀我，他很善良，我要看看他’。我向他说，你见不着他了，他已经去世了。史密斯连连说:‘中国老人很善良’。我看他是真的感到怅然。”
高翔说:“你看，这真叫做不打不相识了。”
但是，当时，美国的决策者仍不断派飞机入侵中国海南岛。
1967年6月26日，一架美国F—4C战斗机在陵水附近侵
入中国。海军航空兵某部王柱书、吕纪良双机起飞迎战。王柱书有意推迟打开半雷达，以免被美机护尾器发觉。直到光学瞄准具已经完全套住美机，距离254米时，美机还未觉察，他三炮齐发，打掉了美机的右水平尾翼。僚机吕纪良接着攻击，击中美机翼根部，美机起火爆炸，坠落在榆林以南。6月27日，美国国防部不得不公开承认：“美国空军一架幽灵式喷气机，在海南岛附近误入中共区上空，被中共飞机击落。”

攻击机在万宁侵入中国，海军航空兵某部陈武录、王顺义驾机起飞，利用内侧阳光，隐蔽接近，陈武录三次开炮，将美军僚机打了个空中开花。王顺义打伤了美军长机。这架美国飞机在岘港外海坠落了。
从1965年到1970年，人民海军在中国国土上第一次对外国
入侵者作战，获得全胜，留给人们许多思考。
