1975年的陶哲轩出生在澳大利亚，童年时期就展露出过人天份；上幼儿园时老师就发现他对数字有着天生的敏感和兴趣，之后加入了南澳大利亚天才儿童协会。小哲轩也因此结识了其他的天才儿童。而陶哲轩在7岁时自学微积分，还出版了人生第一本书，内容是关于用Basic程式计算完全数。
陶哲轩在24岁时被加州大学洛杉矶分校聘为教授，成为该校史上最年轻的教授；31岁获得麦克阿瑟基金（MacArthur Foundation）天才奖和数学界的“诺贝尔奖”菲尔兹奖。他在数学上的成就有目共睹，却又保持谦逊不断追求新知，他又被称为是“数学界的莫扎特”。
