据Quartz报道称，2016年上半年，IBM再度成为美国专利领域的领先者，平均每天获得专利23.6项，今年迄今为止获得的专利较之去年同期增加了13%之多。而在去年，IBM获得的专利相当于全美专利的1%。目前IBM的重点业务有云计算、分析，人工智能以及基础科学研究等。

紧追IBM的是三星电子，这家企业获得的专利数量和IBM之间的差距越来越小，或许未来几年内，三星将挤下IBM，成为全美专利领域的王者。

另外，谷歌近年来的专利数量也出现了爆炸式增长。2015年，谷歌获得专利超过3000项，相当于五年前的11倍还多。值得一提的还有FaceBook，这家公司在2010年只获得了7项专利，但是到了2015年却达到了389项。
