德拉蒙德加入谷歌是在2013年，当时谷歌风投GV（Google Ventures）给了一个叫Uber的创企2.58亿美元的资金注入。这是当时GV的最大笔投资。之后两家公司和睦共事，展开新密合作，包括基于谷歌地图开发打车软件等等。
不过，商业场上的蜜月期并不长久。随着谷歌和Uber都开始在汽车领域相继发力，两巨头之间因竞争而疏远也是可以预见的事。据彭博社报道，谷歌从去年开始在做一个用自动驾驶汽车打车的项目。而Uber近几年发展飞速，从一个无名创企到今日互联网打车业的绝对统治者。面对自动驾驶的商机，Uber自然也不甘落后。Uber正在与沃尔沃联合打造自动驾驶汽车，并且不久就将在匹兹堡与大众见面。而且，在地图方面，Uber也另起炉灶，发展了自己的地图数据库。
据德拉蒙德本人说，此举的主要原因是因为Uber和Alphabet两家在汽车业务上日趋出现重叠和竞争，为了避免不必要的干扰，它决定从Uber一方退出。
“Uber是一家发展迅速的公司，在过去几年里我们合作的很愉快。无论是GV还是谷歌都会继续和Uber保持良好合作。”
