“从原料到钢丝，需要50多道工序。仅摸清笔尖钢的成分配比这一环节就要经历多次调整化验、观察实验，每次试验都涉及数千个数据的化验、分析和调整。”太钢技术中心高级工程师王辉绵告诉记者，早在“十二五”期间，太钢就针对笔尖用不锈钢材料进行了大量的基础性研究试验，基本掌握了笔头用不锈钢的特性和制笔行业对材料性能的要求。
在此基础上，2016年太钢开展新一轮技术攻关，经过5轮近百项试验，才在笔头用不锈钢材料的易切削性、性能稳定性、耐锈蚀性等7大类重大工艺难题上取得突破，掌握了贵重金属合金均匀化、夹杂物无害化处理等多项关键技术。
中国造笔尖钢何时能取代进口？
笔尖钢技术取得突破，许多网友都在关心，目前我们在这项技术上到底达到了什么样的水平？中国造的圆珠笔头何时能够完全取代进口？
王辉绵认为，笔尖钢研发成功后，目前已初步具备了批量生产的能力与条件。他说，2016年9月，太钢成功生产出第一批切削性好的直径2.3毫米的不锈钢钢丝材料，经过国内知名制笔企业实验室近千次的极限测试，用太钢原料生产出来的笔芯实现了不同的角度下的连续不断地书写800米不断线。测试结果表明，圆珠笔出水均匀度、笔尖耐磨性基本稳定，产品质量与国外产品相当。
对于中国造笔尖钢的出现，许多制笔企业表现出了浓厚的兴趣。但在实际应用方面，大多数企业目前仍持观望态度。某制笔企业负责人认为，新技术从测试到实际投产应用，可能还有一个过程。他说，虽然国内企业在笔尖钢的制造技术上取得了突破，但产品目前仍然处在测试阶段，最终产品质量能否达到国际领先水准还有待观察。
“中国造圆珠笔头要想取代进口仍有很长的路要走。”太钢集团副总经理高建兵告诉记者，目前他们已与两家国内制笔企业签订了供货合同。但自主研发的笔尖钢要想完全替代进口，除了在技术应用上进一步完善以外，还要考虑市场因素，如何将产品广泛推向市场，仍需生产与营销部门密切协作。
研发笔尖钢技术的意义何在？
对于研发笔尖钢技术的意义，有网友提出疑问，花费巨资研发一项高度成熟、利润有限的大众商品，其投入与产出之比是否合理？在基于精细化的产业分工和广泛的全球贸易背景下，我们是不是确有必要执着于造出圆珠笔头？
在太钢集团看来，笔尖钢的研发成功对其有着长远的意义。高建兵表示，虽然笔尖钢在中国的总需求只有1000多吨，市场总价值按目前看只有1亿多元，无论是产量还是效益，在不锈钢行业占比都很小，但这项技术的研发成功标志着企业生产精细化水平和程度的提高。他说，在如今去产能、企业转型升级的大背景下，创新技术、升级产品结构将是企业未来的发展方向，而笔尖钢技术的研发只是他们迈出的第一步。
对于国内的制笔企业来说，笔尖钢技术的突破无疑也是个好消息。中国每年生产400多亿支圆珠笔，是世界上最大的圆珠笔生产国。然而，作为核心部件之一的圆珠笔尖所需的特殊用钢，却长期完全依赖进口，每年企业需要用每吨12万元左右的价格，从日本等国家进口1000多吨。不仅如此，由于核心技术的缺失，在国际市场上我们的企业从生产加工到标准制定都缺乏主动权。
在如此困局面前，中国造笔尖钢的出现就显得意义非凡。据专家介绍，中国研制成功易切削不锈钢线材以后，日本的钢材供应商立刻将价格从每吨12.5万元下调到9万元左右，而如果笔尖钢能完全实现中国国产化，国内制笔企业的成本将进一步下降，我们也将在国际市场上获得更多主动权。
