18日下午，世界卫生组织结核病和艾滋病防治亲善大使彭丽媛应世界卫生组织总干事陈冯富珍和联合国艾滋病规划署执行主任西迪贝邀请，在瑞士日内瓦出席为她举行的亲善大使任期续延暨颁奖仪式。
彭丽媛除了领取结核病和艾滋病防治亲善大使任期续延证书外，她还获得了世卫组织荣誉勋章以及艾滋病防治“杰出成就奖”。

1月15日至18日，国家主席习近平对瑞士进行国事访问，出席世界经济论坛年会并访问在瑞士的国际组织，彭丽媛陪同出访。彭丽媛领取上述亲善大使任期续延证书及“杰出成就奖”，正是在此次“瑞士之行”期间。
“政事儿”2011年6月3日，世卫组织总干事陈冯富珍任命彭丽媛为世界卫生组织结核病和艾滋病防治亲善大使。
陈冯富珍在当时的聘任仪式上说：“她（彭丽媛）享有国内外授予的众多荣誉。我们感到非常自豪的是，彭女士现在将作为一名演员和艺术家，借她闻名于世的声音和慈悲之心来支持世卫组织针对这两种疾病所做的工作。在这方面，具有影响的人士可带来重要改变。”
“这样一来，你就走上了另外一个国际舞台，你的声音、你的同情还有你的表演风度将会招致许多善意，给人带来许多好处，不仅在中国是这样，对世界每一个角落受到这两种疾病影响的数百万人也是这样。”陈冯富珍说。
彭丽媛在当时的聘任仪式上说：“世卫组织给我这个重要角色是莫大的荣誉。我希望对世卫组织所作的伟大工作作出重要贡献，拯救结核病人和艾滋病人的生命。我的参与将惠及那些面临高风险的人群。”
其实彭丽媛很早前就参与预防艾滋病的各种公益活动。2006年初，彭丽媛接受前卫生部的邀请，成为一名预防艾滋病义务宣传员。
成为预防艾滋病宣传员的当年，彭丽媛就到安徽阜阳探访艾滋病贫困儿童救助协会的孩子，与艾滋病患儿一起做游戏。
同样是在2006年，彭丽媛在接受媒体采访时说：“我觉得大家最主要的是不了解艾滋病的知识，所以很多人会歧视他们，跟他们接触，就怕受到艾滋病病毒的感染。其实不是的，他们需要朋友，需要平等，也需要关爱。所以我认为跟他们在一起玩儿，一起读书，或者一起交朋友，都不会受到感染的。 ”
曾是中国政协委员的彭丽媛也不忘在中国两会期间，关注艾滋病致孤儿童的心理健康等问题。
2008年中国两会小组讨论会上，彭丽媛说：“国家应建立对艾滋病病毒感染者和病人的未成年子女登记、上报和日常随访制度，及时了解这些孩子的心理需求并提供帮助。通过家庭和社区收养、家庭寄养、小家庭养育、机构供养等形式，进行有针对性的心理辅导，解决艾滋病致孤儿童的心理孤独和自卑情绪。”
2010年7月18日，第18届世界艾滋病大会在奥地利首都维也纳召开。彭丽媛出席了“关注中国，应对艾滋病”的主题活动，并发表演讲。
次年的2011年，彭丽媛被聘任为世界卫生组织结核病和艾滋病防治亲善大使。
当年，彭丽媛与两名艾滋病感染者小朋友一同拍摄了一段30秒的反艾滋病歧视公益广告，片名叫《没有歧视，我们在一起》，在镜头中，彭丽媛与两位小朋友零距离接触，呼吁大众放下歧视。
2012年，彭丽媛再次拍摄了一个近6分钟的预防艾滋病宣传片，在片中介绍几年中遇到的艾滋儿童，她同孩子们一起弹琴、唱歌。
2014年以来，她参加了“爱在阳光下——艾滋病致孤儿童夏令营”开营式（2014年8月）、“美好青春我做主红丝带健康大使青春校园行”启动仪式（2014年12月）、“艾滋病和结核病防治宣传校园行——走进海南大学”（2015年3月）等多个活动。
2013年后，彭丽媛还时常以国家主席习近平夫人的身份，在外事场合参与有关抗击艾滋病的相关活动。
2015年9月22日至28日，国家主席习近平对美国进行国事访问并出席联合国成立70周年系列峰会，彭丽媛陪同出访。
9月26日，应时任联合国秘书长潘基文邀请，彭丽媛出席了“每个妇女、每个儿童”倡议高级别会议开幕式。彭丽媛发表演讲时回忆了一个艾滋病孤儿的故事。她介绍，2006年，自己作为中国预防艾滋病大使第一次到贫困的农村，见到全家感染艾滋病并失去父母的5岁男孩高俊。当时的情况让她心碎。随后在政府和民间团体的帮助下，高俊健康长大。
彭丽媛说，在过去10年中，她帮助过数以百计像高俊这样的艾滋病感染者，最让人高兴的是，看到他们在社会的帮助下健康成长。
2015年12月5日，国家主席习近平夫人彭丽媛在约翰内斯堡出席“中非携手迈向没有艾滋病的未来”中非艾滋病防控倡导活动，同南非、加纳等10个非洲国家元首夫人发布《携手迈向没有艾滋病的未来》联合倡议并致辞。

彭丽媛说：“防治艾滋病，要从教育抓起，让孩子们从小就有防范意识；要依靠经济发展，提高公共卫生健康水平。”
2016年9月5日，国家主席习近平夫人彭丽媛和出席二十国集团领导人杭州峰会外方代表团团长夫人共同出席“艾滋病防治宣传校园行——走进浙江大学”活动。
彭丽媛呼吁各国携手提升艾滋病防治水平，并向来宾们表示，作为世界卫生组织结核病和艾滋病防治亲善大使、中国国家卫生和计划生育委员会预防艾滋病宣传员，我一直积极支持和参与“艾滋病防治宣传校园行”活动。
另外，在每年12月1日的世界艾滋病日，彭丽媛都会出席相关活动。
2016年世界艾滋病日主题宣传活动在北京航空航天大学举行，活动中彭丽媛和现场的嘉宾、大学生一起举起防艾宣传牌，倡导全社会行动起来，为防艾贡献力量。
