杨振宁院士20世纪五六十年代先后创立“杨-米尔斯规范场”论和提出“杨-巴克斯特方程”，因与李政道共同提出弱相互作用中宇称不守恒原理而获1957年诺贝尔物理学奖。姚期智院士长期从事计算机科学和量子信息科学研究，2000年获得计算机科学领域最高奖图灵奖。

中科院学部专门制定了《中国科学院外籍院士转为中国科学院院士暂行办法》。按照新制订的程序和规则，杨振宁院士加入中国科学院数学物理学部，姚期智院士加入中国科学院信息技术科学部。中国科学院院士目前人数为754位，外籍院士人数为78位。
