根据中科院公开简历显示，1946年12月出生于上海的姚期智，今年刚满70周岁。1967年获得台湾大学物理学士学位后，姚期智前往美国哈佛大学求学，并获得物理博士学位。1975年，姚期智又获得了计算机科学博士学位，随后留美任教。1975年至1986年间，他先后在美国麻省理工学院数学系、斯坦福大学计算机系、加利福尼亚大学伯克利分校计算机系、普林斯顿大学等著名学府担任教授。
另外，姚期智还拥有4个外籍头衔，其中包括美国科学院外籍院士、美国科学与艺术学院外籍院士、美国计算机协会会士及国际密码协会会士。
据中科院公开资料显示，姚期智长期从事计算机科学和量子信息科学研究。在三大方面做出突出贡献：创建理论计算机科学的重要次领域：通讯复杂性和伪随机数生成计算理论；奠定现代密码学基础，在基于复杂性的密码学和安全形式化方法方面有根本性贡献；解决线路复杂性、计算几何、数据结构及量子计算等领域的开放性问题并建立全新典范。
2000年时姚期智获得了有“计算机界的诺贝尔奖”之称的图灵奖，他也是唯一获此奖项的华人学者。由于该奖对获奖条件要求极高，评奖程序极为严格，一般每年只奖励一名计算机科学家，只有极少数年度有两名合作者或在同一方向作出贡献的科学家共享此奖。因此它是计算机界最负盛名、最崇高的一个奖项。
57岁全职回国 填补国内学科的空白
2004年，姚期智决定将57岁以后的生活回归到中国大陆，开创科学研究的新舞台。
2002年5月，姚期智曾回国，在上海、南京和北京与国内计算机领域的学者进行了广泛接触和交流。也正是在这一次的访问中，清华学生的聪敏好学给姚期智留下了深刻的印象。两年后，也就是2004年9月，姚期智辞去了普林斯顿大学终身教职，卖掉了在美国的房子，正式加盟清华大学高等研究中心任全职教授。
姚期智的全职回国，使得清华的计算机学科第一次集齐了理论、应用、系统结构和软件四大领域的优秀学者，这在国际上也是不多见的。
深受传统文化影响 “愿为中国人做点事情”
曾在美国学习工作36年，在57岁时以后又将人生归宿在中国大陆，姚期智的人生轨迹宛如一个圆。
2004年清华大学网站曾发表文章《图灵奖得主姚期智印象》，文章中时任清华高等研究中心主任的聂华桐先生说，姚期智是怀有中国情结的。姚期智说他在清华教育年轻一代，有一种满足感，是在美国教美国学生时所没有的。在这里，他教育的是中国年轻人！他之所以愿意接受清华的讲席教授职位，自然因为这里是中国，来了可以为中国人做一点事情。”
尽管在美国生活了36年，姚期智对中国仍然充满了感情，对中国的传统文化仍然情有独钟。直到现在，了解中国的历史，欣赏中国的文化，听古典音乐，阅读专业以外的书籍，依旧是姚期智填补“闲暇”之余的主要内容。
姚期智说，“中国是我的祖国，我对同胞和中国的事情都有很深的感情。我受中国传统文化的教育和影响还是非常深厚的，我对整个中国的感情非常深厚。目前国内有一个很好的目标，要建设出几个世界一流的研究型大学来，我觉得我现在能在清华参与这件工作也算是一件小小的贡献。希望能尽点儿微薄之力。”
他与中科院结缘 13年如今身份终“转正”
根据相关资料显示，早在2004年，姚期智回国的第一年就已当选为中国科学院外籍院士，至今已经13年。而此次与姚期智一同转为中国科学院院士的杨振宁更是中科院产生的首批外籍院士。
1994年6月8日，经过中科院第七次院士大会选举，产生了中国科学院首批外籍院士。名单中共有14位外籍院士，杨振宁就是其中之一。
根据《中国科学院外籍院士选举办法》规定，对中国科学技术事业做出重要贡献，在国际上享有很高学术地位的外国籍学者、专家，可被推荐并当选为中国科学院外籍院士。外籍院士的评审和选举与中国科学院院士增选工作同年进行，每两年进行一次。

会议强调指出，国防和国家安全、新兴和交叉领域两方面的特别推荐工作，是完善院士制度的重要改革举措，受到社会各界广泛关注，应在总结试行经验基础上继续探索推进。
