Sony: VR-Sony-IT does not need the killer application information

VR industry over the next ten years will have a dramatic change in the world, such as health care, education, social, training, video, games, and so on. But appears to be currently accepted reality is – to define the platform software, killer application to attract a large number of consumers, is yet to come.

Sony's Richard Marks (lichade·makesi) is responsible for the Sony interactive entertainment (SIE) research and development team of PlayStation in Magic Lab. Magic Lab founded by Marks, by exploring how technology can create new entertainment experiences, in order to advance the game to the limit. He joined the PlayStation team since 1999, also helped create the EyeToy and PlayStation Eye camera, and PS Move controller. Recently Marks and team participation PSVR project, eye-tracking and other innovative experiments. He acquired a Bachelor's degree in Aeronautical Science at MIT, and Stanford underwater engineering doctoral degrees.

Let us hear what he see VR applications.

Q: do you think VR killer application should have what kind of features?

A: I don't think that VR has a single "killer application". A medium can't be only one characteristic that defines it. If you like Sci-Fi, is falling in love with VR of science fiction, but if you like history, you will probably like VR history. Virtual reality is a new medium, and the single "killer app" concept, to its great potential discounts.

But I believe there will be a series of "leads" to help promote the mass popularity and interest, as we see from other media in the past. These leads will have access to unique characteristics of VR, have broad appeal in content area. VR is two of the most important characteristics of a (in a different local location) presence, the other is (to share with others on this site) shared sense of place.

There are many techniques to achieve these characteristics for mass adoption, VR, the biggest challenge is the hardware required – to receive hardware (such as cheap, lightweight), while ensuring high quality will be in the area of access to broader audience for maximum success. Of course we believe that acceptance is the biggest advantage PSVR; in more than 53 million units over the PS4 will run on the host, so that everybody can easily enter the VR world.

Q: If so, which areas do you think produces VR's first killer app?

A: the field of entertainment, including games, probably the first successful because VR is adding products in this area. As game developers have been trying to create interesting virtual world; I've heard a lot of game design, said VR vision they realize they want to create the media.

We are starting to see the emergence of several leading applications. Horror game is a type of sense of existence to take advantage of VR, a lot of people have recently enjoyed VR version of resident evil 7 experience. I have heard many people say Star Wars front: Grand Theft of the first VR (though not a full game) is their favorite VR experience.

I also think recently, social games are the most successful areas because it provides can make people interact socially in the VR "cause", rather than a simple VR chat room.

Q: do you think that 2017 appears VR: killer application?

A: I believe the 2017 there will be a more than any previous games, leads with a landmark interactive level VR applications, give full play to "sharing" feature, which is something I'm looking forward to.

问:你觉得VR杀手级应用应该具备什么样的特点?

答:我不觉得VR会有一款单一的“杀手级应用”。一个媒介不可能只有一款定义它特性的应用。如果你喜欢科幻,就会爱上VR里的科幻,而如果喜欢历史,则就很可能中意VR中的历史。虚拟现实是一个全新的媒介,而单一的“杀手级应用”的构想,会对它的巨大潜力打折扣。

但是我相信会有一系列的“主角应用”,帮助推进大规模普及和人们的兴趣,就好像我们在过去其他媒介上看到的那样。这些主角应用将会利用到VR独有的特性,在内容领域有广泛的吸引力。VR最重要的两个特性一个是(在与所处位置不同地方的)存在感,另一个则是(与他人一同分享这一地点的)共享存在感。

有很多技术可以达到这些特性,对于VR的大规模普及而言,最大的挑战就是所需要的硬件——所以能够接受的硬件(比如低价、轻量),同时保证高质量,将会在获得广泛受众领域获得最大的成功。当然我们认为易接受性是PSVR最大的优势;它在超过5300万台以上的PS4主机上都能运行,让大家都能很轻易地进入VR世界。

问:如果预测的话,你觉得哪个领域,会诞生VR首个杀手级应用?

答:娱乐领域,包括游戏,很可能最先获得成功,因为VR正在加入这一领域的产品中。同样游戏开发者已经在尝试打造有趣的虚拟世界了;我已经听到很多游戏策划表示,VR让他们真正意识到了他们想要打造远景所在的媒介。

我们已经开始看到几个主角应用的出现了。恐怖游戏是一种能够利用到VR存在感的类型,很多人最近也都很享受VR版生化危机7的体验。我也听到很多人称《星球大战前线:侠盗一号VR》(虽然还不是一款完整的游戏)是他们最喜欢的VR体验。

我还觉得最近,社交游戏会是最为成功的领域,因为它会提供能让人在VR里进行社交互动的“原因”,而不是一个单纯的VR聊天室。

问:你觉得2017年会出现VR杀手级应用吗?

答:我非常相信2017年将会出现一款超过以前任何游戏的、带有划时代交互水平的主角VR应用,充分发挥“共享存在感”的特性,这也是我非常期待的东西。
