坠亡发生于南开大悦城南门外大街与南马路交口处的入口附近，孩子是从位于4楼的将太无二餐厅门外的共享空间处坠落的。记者在现场看到，将太无二餐厅门外的区域以及附近的直梯、扶梯均已拉上警戒线，不许任何人靠近。且从4楼到负一层，每一层的相同区域都已被封锁，无法进入。
现场民警告诉记者，事发时两名幼童均由孩子的家长抱着，一个孩子坠落后，家长想要去拉孩子，结果失手导致另一个孩子也掉了下去。
