郭永怀1956年至1968年任力学所副所长，他是中国卓越的力学家、应用数学家，是中国近代力学事业的组织者和奠基者之一，也是中国核武器研制单位的主要技术负责人之一。他为发展中国的国防科研事业，在发展空气动力学、气体动力学、爆轰学以及新兴的力学学科方面，在培养青年科技人才方面都做出了杰出贡献。
