　　载人潜水器及96名科考队员近期将从三亚启航，奔赴南海调查区实施科学调查。
　　据介绍，第二航段“蛟龙”号肩负着双重科学目标。首先，是在南海北部开展1000米级多金属结核采集系统海试区的选划任务，获取多金属结核采矿试验工程所需海底地质、深海环境参数等，开展选划区域的相关环境基础数据收集，为构建海洋采矿环境评价体系提供支撑，并为中国今后参与国际海底采矿相关国际规则的制定，争取国际话语权等奠定基础。
　　其次，是获取南海北缘洋—陆转换带以及遗迹扩张中心高精度地形地貌数据、岩石、生物等样品，为深入研究该区域微生物、大型生物的群落组成、分布规律，及南海初始岩石圈裂解过程、海底扩张及扩张后地质过程的深部机制等前沿科学问题提供坚实支撑。
　　据介绍，第二代潜航员将担任本航段所有下潜任务的主驾驶。通过第一航段的主驾实操培训，中国自主选拔培养的第二批6名载人潜水器实习潜航员均经受住热液区复杂环境的考验，圆满完成调查作业任务，具备了独立驾驶潜水器开展水下作业的能力。第二航段，面对新的作业环境和调查任务，第二批实习潜航员将继续开展新一轮独立主驾操作，进一步提高其水下作业技能。
