　　吉布提战略位置非常重要，扼守红海进入印度洋的战略要道曼德海峡，这里素有“海上咽喉”之称，是连接欧、亚、非三大洲之间重要的海上战略通道。军事专家对《环球时报》记者表示，这个保障基地能大幅提高中国护航编队的后勤综合保障能力，对油料、蔬菜等物质储存以及人员休整作用都很大。在人道主义救援减灾行动、维和等兵力使用上也可以有更多的空间。
