4月23日是袁庚的百年诞辰日。
一百年前，1917年4月23日，袁庚出生于广东省宝安县大鹏镇（现深圳龙岗区大鹏街道）。在革命年代，他曾用过欧阳珊、袁更这两个名字，但他最为人所知的还是袁庚这个名字，这两个字已经与改革开放波澜壮阔的历史紧密相连，袁庚作为深圳特区建设、改革开放探索者的形象定格在历史上。

“时间就是金钱，效率就是生命”

这句今天的中国人耳熟能详的话，正是袁庚提出的。回到当时的历史语境里，这样的口号引起了不小的争议，袁庚在当时也遭受了不小的压力。
1983年下半年，袁庚在与时任副总理的谷牧谈起这个口号时说：“我是准备带‘帽子’的，有人说是资本主义的东西。”谷牧笑而不答。1984年1月26日，邓小平在视察蛇口时。在“海上世界”游船上，袁庚斗胆向邓小平提起了这个敏感的话题。

置身于“蛇口风波”中
1988年1月13日，在蛇口招商大厦9层一个普通会议室里举行了一场“青年教育专家与蛇口青年座谈会”，当时的参与者或许也没意识到这次会议的“分量”。经过媒体传播，它在中国掀起一场有关新时期青年思想工作的大讨论。

就在会议结束后不久，2月1日，《蛇口通讯报》以《蛇口：陈腐说教与现代意识的一次激烈交锋》为题对这次座谈会作了报道，随后又连发数篇文章，批评3名报告者思想意识僵化。2月12日，《羊城晚报》报道了此事，历史上著名的“蛇口风波”的影响开始由南及北。
当年8月，1988年8月6日，《人民日报》发表7000字长文《“蛇口风波”答问录》，并就此开辟专栏展开议论。到底如何看待这些看似新颖的言论，成为当时关心中国改革开放命运的人都热衷思考、积极回应的话题。
据马立诚在《“蛇口风波”始末》中记述，从8月8日起到9月14日该专栏结束，短短1个月零6天，1531件信稿从中国各地涌到人民日报社。当时的来信中，信稿的80%是各地及部队从事思想政治工作的同志写来的，可见关注者甚多。
同月，袁庚在《人民日报》中公开表态：在蛇口不许以言治罪。并表示赞赏“我可以不同意你的观点，但我誓死捍卫你发表不同意见的权利”的观点。

据统计数据，在1978年，蛇口还只是不足千人的小镇，而到袁庚在1993年离休的时候，招商局集团的家底已壮大到200亿元。此时的蛇口，人均GDP已经达到了5000美元，堪比“亚洲四小龙”。
离休后，已经75岁的袁庚仍旧经常参加各类活动，为深圳改革发展建言献策。2003年7月，86岁，袁庚被香港特别行政区政府授予“金紫荆勋章”；10月被上海市人民政府授予“中国改革之星”的称号。2016年1月31日，袁庚在深圳逝世，享年99岁。
纪念历史是为了更好地出发。斯人已逝，而改革闯将的余音犹存。
