其中一名医生玛丽亚·采科娃回国后就开始在索菲亚医学院神经科提供针灸治疗。1976年，政府下令在所有主要的地区医院，以及医疗培训机构创设针灸科。
保加利亚中医协会主席埃米尔·伊利耶夫说：“40年前，保加利亚创建了针灸治疗的良好基础，但是1989年随着政治变革的到来被不幸毁掉。”
伊利耶夫说，如今的中医医生良莠不齐。他说：“现在，有些治疗是在一些私人小诊所里进行的，有的诊所有好医生，有些诊所的医生则不合格，对于病人来说风险很大。”
今年6月份，保加利亚中医协会将迎来一个来自上海中医药大学的代表团，但是这次访问是否会带来合作项目还不得而知。
