镜头前，这位“高情商”的科学家，清华学子眼中的“大先生”，西装革履，幽默风趣，用带有山东口音的普通话和年轻人一起畅谈青春和梦想，谈谈如何做一个快乐的、有责任的追梦者。
百万美元奖金怎么用？给学生改善生活！
薛其坤出场没多久，主持人撒贝宁就向他抛出了一个问题：如何使用“未来科学大奖”的一百万美元奖金？
“改善生活”。薛其坤毫无迟疑的直率回答，瞬间逗笑了全场观众。

人生并非一帆风顺，在精彩之前，薛其坤也遭遇过挫折。他出生于山东沂蒙山区，考研考了三次，读博士花了七年。

在国外留学期间，他获得在国际会议中作学术报告的机会，但是糟糕的英语口语让他面临挑战而不知所措。
为了保证万无一失，他把要讲的每个单词、每句话写下来，模拟练习了80多遍，在练习中意识到发音上的错误，把控报告时间的能力也达到不可思议的状态。

正是因为孜孜不倦的追求精神，他的演讲最终征服了在场的国外知名教授们，当时听着赞扬与祝贺，薛其坤觉得“像夏天很渴时喝了冰水一样，很舒服”。
追求极致，让自己真正的快乐。对于学生，薛其坤老师同样把他们培养成追求极致的人。

薛其坤讲到，之前他让一个英语技能差的学生修改报告，并要求把修改的10版都发邮件给他看，然而学生修改的版本之间的存盘间隔不到一分钟，这种敷衍了事的态度让薛其坤很生气。
于是他和学生面谈，一个字一个字地改语法、段落，教给学生用心对待，每个版本都要有修改方向。如今，这位学生已成为国内顶尖大学的老师。看到极致带来的“快乐”传递下去，薛其坤感到很幸福。
追求极致才能取得成功，也让这位执着的追梦人在他50岁时，带领自己的团队继续攀登科学的高峰。薛其坤说自己现在五十多岁了，用一个物理概念“惯性”来比喻的话，尽管身体的惯性不是很大，但是内心、精神上的惯性很大。他停不下来，他想用这种追求极致的态度和精神去克服新的世界难题。

“每个人在成长路上的探索过程都不会是一帆风顺的。我用了3次机会考上研究生，花了7年时间读博。克服困难的过程，就是追求极致、达到快乐的一种方式。”
“如果我们每个人，都能在追求极致的过程中享受到幸福，每个人都能用追求极致的态度去对待自己的工作，我们的国家一定会变得更加强大。”
“科学几乎是人类在奋斗中竞争最激烈、最难的领域，需要投入最优秀的人在里面。”

清华距离世界一流大学的距离？长处推进 短板补上
观众提问环节，现场一位来自北京大学的青年代表问“清华和北大培养的学生有何相同、不同？”薛教授说，两个学校都是想用最好的师资最好的条件，培养对社会有用的人才，可能在管理上，北大会相对更加自由一些，而清华对学生的引导会更多些，两个方面哪个过了都不好。当然了，最直接的不同是，北大的女生要比清华多一些，大家都看得出来。这样既诚恳又幽默的回答，引来现场观众的阵阵掌声。
2016年度QS世界大学的排名中，清华第24名，北大第39名，《美国新闻与世界报道》的世界大学排名，清华是57名，北大是53名。对此，薛教授认为，这些排名有一定的可信度，也有其局限性，因为它有一个历史的过程，我们应理性看待。比如获得诺贝尔奖的人数，有的大学有上百人，而其学校历史就有四五百年。

至于清华和北大距离世界一流大学究竟有多远，这位青年代表引用了两校广为流传的段子，薛教授也十分自然地接道，“隔一条街嘛”。而对于两校“相爱相杀”之说，薛教授十分可爱地说道，“我们没有相杀，我们全都是爱”，惹得大家欢笑一片。
回到严肃的问题，薛教授认为，目前中国的大学在各方面都取得了很大的进步，一些具体项目更是位居世界前列，成果喜人。

提问环节，有观众说，读薛教授的研究生，研一只能扫地，研二就可以擦桌子了。

薛其坤解释道，物理实验的成功离不开扎实的基本功，研究生一年级，学生都要认真学习理论基础，到了研二以后，就可以进实验室跟着高年级同学学习技术，但仍不能马上操作仪器，这时难免会有学长学姐请你帮忙擦地，算是小插曲。

另一个提问来自在湖南农村创业的名校毕业生，他请薛其坤谈谈对学生转行的看法。

薛其坤说，人生道路的选择没有高低、大小、贵贱之分，有些同学读完了研究生仍然选择放弃科研，也许是发现自己真的不适合这项工作，虽然也有些可惜，但转行的决定也依然是正确的。并且，在这个团队中，除了科研知识，所学到的团队合作的精神、精益求精的态度，不管在什么行业都能让你受益，不能把它们丢掉。
