自从自动驾驶项目在2014年正式开展之后，Uber就一直在寻找合适的汽车供应商。在FCA之前，他们就接触过多家的汽车生产商，此前Uber和丰田也达成过一个自动驾驶车辆租赁协议。现阶段Uber还和这些生产商们保持“暧昧”的关系，只是和 FCA 的合作最为深入。

2015年初，Uber与卡内基·梅隆大学在匹兹堡建立了名为“高等技术研发中心”（Advanced Technologies Center）的机构，进行自动驾驶汽车的研发。今年二月，这个研发中心进行了二次拓展，铺设了多种测试路段。

虽然步伐稍慢，但如果这次Uber和 FCA 能顺利达成合作协议，也称得上是强强联手。菲亚特此前已经有和Alphabet’s Google自动驾驶项目合作的经验。今年5月，菲亚特已经为Alphabet’s Google生产了一支100辆自动驾驶汽车组成的车队。
