贝尔维尤和硅谷的圣马特奥也是阿里巴巴在美国的两大研发团队所在地。阿里的贝尔维尤部门创建于2014年，目前已有40人规模，人员几乎都来自于微软和亚马逊等西雅图地区的科技巨头，距离微软的必应部门甚至只有一条街的距离。阿里CTO行癫(张建峰)此次来到贝尔维尤主持阿里技术论坛，一个重要目的也是为阿里在美国招聘科技人才。
会场内坐着的几百人中，有不少是慕名而来的西雅图地区华人技术人才。他们希望更多了解阿里的业务状况、企业文化和技术架构，而技术出身的行癫无疑是最好的讲解员。在活动结束后的自助餐上，行癫也毫无架子和一群工程师和程序员边吃边聊，相谈甚欢。
作为第80号员工的行癫，加入阿里已有12年时间。从淘宝架构师开始，一路晋升至淘宝总裁，再到阿里中国零售平台负责人、中台事业群总裁，直至今年4月被任命为CTO(首席技术官)；行癫成为了阿里并不多见的同时具备技术和业务背景的高管。
美国研发侧重算法
“中国经济发展很好，也有非常多的机会。在微软、谷歌、Facebook的中国人才，他们今天很有兴趣回国，这(技术论坛)是吸引他们很多人来的机会。”行癫在接受新浪科技采访时表示。“愿意留在本地的，可以继续在阿里美国部门工作；当然也有很多人选择回国工作。阿里已经吸引了很多在美国的中国技术人才加入。”
他介绍说，阿里在美国的研发部门主要侧重于技术算法方向。这主要是因为产品类的研发需要和中国市场业务结合得比较紧密，需要更多去理解用户；而算法类的研发相对比较抽象一点。但美国研发团队在阿里也扮演着重要角色，在算法、搜索等领域起到了非常关键的作用。
此前媒体在报道阿里在西雅图招聘人才时，曾经预测阿里云有意在美国扩张业务。但行癫予以了否认，他强调阿里云目前重心还是服务好中国国内企业，只是在美国有一些研发人员。但谈到阿里其他业务的海外扩张时，行癫表示，不能简单指望中国公司把业务直接搬到美国市场，因为中国创办的业务一定有本地化的考虑，并不一定适应海外市场的情况，这需要一个逐步的过程。
不过，阿里在美国的投资活动倒是非常活跃，先后投资了Tango、Magic Leap等引人瞩目的创业公司。行癫表示，自己来贝尔维尤之前在硅谷拜访了很多科技公司，计划未来加强双方的合作，不仅包括了资本和技术，也包括了商业合作等诸多方面。
先做研发再谈研究
谈到阿里在研究和研发方面的侧重点时，行癫表示，不同公司有不同的侧重点。IBM、微软等公司在基础研究方面投入了很多经历，也取得了巨大的成功。而阿里更像苹果、谷歌这样的公司，研发工作与产品业务结合得非常紧密，阿里目前还没有纯粹的理论性研究部署。但他强调，公司发展到了一定程度之后，肯定会进行前瞻性的、与业务联系不太紧密的研究。
行癫进一步阐述说，阿里目前的几大技术研发方向包括：第一，构建整体的技术系统，保障阿里诸多不同的复杂业务，因为阿里的电商属性，这个系统既是企业级的，也是互联网级别的规模；第二，通过人工智能算法，将人与商品之间的关系变得更加高效，实时匹配给不同的用户；第三，服务器、网络、芯片等基础技术架构；第四，阿里技术的变现，通过阿里云将技术变成能力，如同水电煤气一样提供给阿里的客户。
谈到阿里与亚马逊的对比时，行癫认为阿里的电商业务规模比亚马逊更大，两家公司具有不同的特点，虽然阿里和亚马逊都在做云服务，但阿里要走出自己独特的道路。他提出自己的看法说，很多业务不是技术先进就会领先，特别是2B或者2C的业务，需要提供一系列的生态和工具。阿里需要结合中国目前的市场环境，构建自己的生态，以平台化的道路。
暂无Chatbot产品计划
今年微软、谷歌、Facebook等科技巨头纷纷力推人工智能技术。谈到人工智能与电商平台的结合前景时，行癫介绍称，阿里过去一年也在人工智能领域取得了非常大的研发成果，例如通过人工智能算法向用户推荐商品。他解释说，在移动互联时代，用户缺乏多重输入和查询商品的动力，需要更好的人工智能技术来判断哪些商品适合用户。
行癫补充说，阿里和谷歌及Facebook一样，拥有规模很大的广告业务，因此投入了很多精力研究人工智能与广告的结合技术。此外，阿里主营业务开展也有很多垂直化的领域，而人工智能将会是所有业务的技术基础。不过他明确表示，阿里暂时没有推出类似Chatbot功能的产品。
谈到VR(虚拟现实)技术与电商的结合时，行癫表示，阿里目前成立了VR实验室，探索怎样在三维条件下提供更好的购物体验。“我们要看AR(增强现实)或VR和我们电商业务的契合度，不认为目前的AR或VR是当前购物的最完美解决方案，但阿里最有机会来定义下一个时代的购物体验，会同时探索VR和AR技术，VR只是其中的一个方面。”
