据美国科技新闻网站Engadget报道,作为搜索巨头的谷歌一直在进行图片文件压缩、网页内容压缩方面的开发工作。谷歌希望全球的网络用户(尤其是发展中国家用户)能够更快速下载到网页和图片,改进上网体验。

在压缩图片体积方面,谷歌过去也曾经推出新的文件格式,比如WebP,能够将图片的体积在画质不降低的条件下减少一成。

谷歌的研究团队最近获得了新进展,他们利用了一种开源的压缩算法Guetzli,经过优化和改进,这种算法能够将JPEG的图片体积减少35%。

谷歌团队表示,这种压缩算法和谷歌过去研发的Zopfli算法(用于压缩PNG图片或是gzip压缩包)类似,可以在不发明新文件格式的条件下,对于现有文件格式减少数据体积。

今年初,谷歌还研发出了利用人工智能技术压缩图片体积的技术,据称可以将体积减少四分之三,不过其用途不如此次JPEG压缩技术广泛。

众所周知的是,对于利用移动蜂窝网络上网的智能手机用户,其最大的数据消耗主要来自图片和视频。鉴于目前移动运营商不菲的数据资费,许多消费者实际上并未利用手机观看大量视频。如果上述的压缩算法能够得到快速普及,这无疑将会帮助降低用户的流量开销。
