华为2016年实现全球销售收入5126亿元人民币、同比增长32%；实现净利润371亿元人民币、同比微增0.4%，利润率为7.1%。自业绩报告发布以来，业界一方面惊叹华为迅猛的增长速度，一方面也在关注华为净利润的“滞涨”。
华为副董事长、轮值CEO徐直军于4月11日在第十四届华为分析师大会上提到净利润“滞涨”问题时提醒业界，华为历年以来的研发投资总体规模已经超过3100亿元人民币、2016年研发投入占到总体营收的14.6%。数据显示，华为在研发方面的投入逐年递增，2016年创下新高，达到764亿元(约合110亿美元)。在全球高科技企业中，2016年研发投入超过100亿美元的企业仅有6家，分别为三星、英特尔、谷歌、微软、华为、苹果。
徐直军在第十四届华为分析师大会上还表示，未来华为还将持续加大在基础领域、关键领域的研发投入，每年的投资规模将保持在100亿~200亿美元，从而保证华为在数字化社会、智能化社会不掉队。
数据显示，经过长期投入和建设，华为目前在全球已经拥有15个研究院/所、36个联合创新中心、8万名研发人员。华为目前累计获得专利授权超过6万件，90%以上为发明专利。
但在此前的财报大会上，徐直军表示，“我让他们统计了一下，华为在各个领域的研发投资到底有多大。没看到一个领域比别人大。智能终端如何跟苹果三星比，少得可怜。无线领域如果跟爱立信比，也少。在路由器领域，跟思科比少得可怜。所以虽然总数加起来很大，但每个领域上并不是最大。不能把toB的研发投资，说成是toC的，把toC的研发投资说成toB的。”
加大投资的背景是，华为希望成为“未来智能社会的使能者和推动者”。徐直军告诉《中国经营报》记者，未来保证华为成为未来智能社会的使能者和推动者，华为将坚持做多连接、撑大管道、使能行业数字化三大战略。
特别是在使能行业数字化方面，华为此前已经透露将在企业级业务方面成立华为Cloud BU，进军公有云业务。在第十四届华为分析师大会上，徐直军称，云服务将成为数字化、智能化社会的基本形态，华为必须在云服务领域有所作为。
此前，华为已经推出企业云业务，成立Cloud BU以后，华为将拥有自己运营的公有云平台，还有与中国电信、德国电信等主流电信运营商合作的公有云平台。
徐直军透露，华为在云服务上将坚持两条腿走路，一方面整合自身在各行各业的资源，在行业打造公有云生态，另一方面发挥在电信运营业的资源优势，和电信运营商在公有云方面加大合作。华为将整合自己两个方面的资源优势，最终实现公有云的目标。
